BMW Launches Neue Klasse With iX3 Targeting 500-Mile WLTP Range

BMW uses the iX3 to pivot to a software-defined architecture led by a new “Heart of Joy” controller.

Overview

  • Revealed at the Munich IAA, the iX3 is the first production Neue Klasse model and debuts an 800-volt platform with Gen6 cylindrical cells and up to 400 kW DC charging, with BMW claiming a 231-mile top-up in 10 minutes.
  • The launch 50 xDrive variant features dual motors, roughly 463–469 hp and 475 lb-ft, a 0–62 mph time of 4.9 seconds, and a usable 108 kWh battery, alongside a new Panoramic Vision display and a 17.9-inch center touchscreen.
  • BMW cites a WLTP range of up to 500 miles for Europe, while U.S. models are estimated at over 400 miles EPA, with U.S. pricing starting around $60,000 and deliveries expected by mid-2026.
  • Production begins at the renewables-powered Debrecen, Hungary plant in late 2025, with UK deliveries slated for March 7, 2026 from £58,755 and additional trims, including a lower-cost entry model, to follow.
  • Neue Klasse consolidates vehicle computing into four high-performance “superbrains” to cut wiring and boost capability as BMW positions the iX3 against Tesla and fast-rising Chinese rivals, with an i3 sedan expected to follow in 2026 based on current prototypes.
