BMW Launches Hydrogen-Powered Truck Pilot Between Leipzig and Nuremberg
The initiative includes two hydrogen-powered trucks, new refueling stations, and aims to test the viability of hydrogen for long-haul freight transport.
- BMW has introduced two hydrogen-powered trucks in a pilot project to transport parts between Leipzig and Nuremberg, replacing traditional diesel vehicles.
- The trucks, developed with Iveco, can travel up to 800 kilometers on a single tank and refuel in just four minutes, offering advantages over battery-electric trucks for long-haul routes.
- As part of the project, BMW has opened new hydrogen refueling stations in Leipzig and Hormersdorf to support the operation of the trucks.
- The pilot is part of the EU-backed H2Haul initiative, which aims to evaluate the role of hydrogen technology in decarbonizing heavy freight transport.
- BMW is also exploring hydrogen applications in its Leipzig factory, including its use in forklifts and a hybrid hydrogen-natural gas system for the paint shop.
