BMW Issues Second U.S. Recall Over Starter Fire Risk, Lifting Total to More Than 341,000 Vehicles

Owner notifications begin Nov. 17 with free replacement starters that use a new design.

  • It follows an urgent park-outside recall for 196,355 vehicles involving a corroding starter relay, which also includes a limited number of 2020–2022 Toyota Supras using BMW engines.
  • BMW reports no crashes or injuries related to the starter defects, though overheating can ignite nearby engine protection material in rare circumstances.
  • Dealers were notified on Sept. 25, VIN searches and owner letters will be available Nov. 17, and dealers will replace starters free of charge with redesigned units as parts are expedited.
  • Investigations and supplier reviews continue, with Valeo identified in filings for the earlier starter issue and BMW Australia indicating its market will be affected pending local notices.
