BMW Drops Deadline to End V8 and V12 Production

BMW says strong U.S. demand, along with looser emissions targets, justifies keeping eight- and twelve-cylinder engines in its lineup.

Overview

  • The company confirms there is no fixed timetable to phase out its largest petrol engines, with a spokesperson calling U.S. demand for V8 models "above average."
  • Assembly of V8s and V12s is concentrated at Hams Hall in the UK after Steyr ended V8 production in 2025, with UK-built V12s supplied to Rolls-Royce.
  • About 400 workers in Munich will continue producing cylinder heads, crankcases and crankshafts for these engines as the plant shifts toward Neue Klasse EVs.
  • BMW says V8 options will continue in upcoming high-end models, including the next X5, a refreshed 7 Series, a future X7 and the next X6, with BMW ALPINA variants also retaining V8 power.
  • The S68 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 is being kept compliant for Euro 7, and softer EU and proposed U.S. fuel-economy rules are easing near-term pressure to end combustion engines.
