BMW Data Shows Mini Cooper at 162 km/h Before Kochi Crash

The manufacturer's crash-module readout gives police scientific backing to reconstruct the car’s final seconds to support criminal charges.

Overview

  • A Mini Cooper hit a scooter near Nedumbassery, Kerala, on October 11, killing three people aged about 21.
  • BMW India’s technical inspection, submitted to police on Thursday, found the car was travelling 162 km/h five seconds before the collision and about 144 km/h at impact with brakes applied roughly one second before the crash.
  • Investigators had earlier analysed CCTV that showed the car covered about 500 metres in 11 seconds, a finding the ACSM data now corroborates as evidence of extreme speed.
  • Four 19-year-olds — driver Suhail Sajeev and passengers Ninav, Ameen and Joel — have been named as accused, are in judicial custody, and police say a chemical test found the driver had alcohol well above the legal limit.
  • The probe is led by Aluva DySP Baiju Paulose under district chief KS Sudarshan and officials say the ACSM report is crucial for reconstructing the sequence of events and for possible charges while the Excise department has suspended three bar licences linked to the case.
