BMC Ward Lottery Sets 61 OBC, 15 SC, 2 ST Reservations as 114 Seats Go to Women

The first draw under Maharashtra’s new rotation rules now proceeds to a November 14 draft list ahead of a final notification on November 28.

Overview

  • The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation conducted the public draw on November 11 at Bal Gandharva Rangmandir in Bandra with schoolchildren drawing lots and the process livestreamed.
  • Across 227 wards, 50% of seats are reserved for women, totaling 114, including 31 in OBC, 8 in SC and 1 in ST categories, with 74 in the general category.
  • Category-wise reservations allocate 61 wards to OBC candidates, 15 to SC and 2 to ST, leaving 149 seats in the general category, including 74 for women.
  • Results were sent to the State Election Commission, a draft reservation list will be published on November 14, objections will be accepted through November 20, and the final list is due on November 28.
  • The reshuffle displaces several veteran corporators and, according to reporting, leaves Shinde-led Shiv Sena less affected than BJP and Shiv Sena (UBT), with civic polls expected in January 2026 under a Supreme Court deadline.
