BMC Transfers 695 Engineers Through New Computerised Randomised System

Officials say the software-driven process is intended to curb discretionary postings, raising transparency in engineer assignments.

Overview

  • The BMC completed the first phase of the reshuffle on Friday, issuing transfer orders for 695 engineers across junior, sub/deputy and assistant engineer ranks.
  • The move follows a September circular that introduced an Employee Transfer System Based on Randomization and an online preference window that ran from September 5 to 20.
  • Of 1,695 engineers identified as eligible, 836 submitted up to five posting preferences and a committee led by the Director (Engineering Services and Projects) finalised placements after weighing vacancies and administrative needs.
  • The online process responds to allegations made last October about a cash-for-postings racket that led to the halting of transfers and cancellation of about 122 orders.
  • BMC still faces a large staffing shortfall with roughly 1,065 of 3,690 sanctioned engineering posts vacant, a constraint that will limit how many preferences can be met and affect service delivery.
