BMC Starts Police Action on 4,521 Absentee Poll Staff Ahead of Jan. 15 Mumbai Vote

The move responds to repeated no-shows at mandatory training to safeguard disciplined polling operations.

Overview

  • Show-cause notices went to 6,871 officials for skipping election duties, with 2,350 later reporting and the remaining 4,521 facing police cases, fines and departmental proceedings from January 12.
  • Those facing action include personnel from BMC and agencies such as BEST, BSNL, MTNL, HPCL, LIC, the Railways, the Postal Department, MHADA, NABARD, RCF and nationalised banks.
  • Postal voting for election-duty staff concluded on January 10–11, with 11,627 ballots cast at 23 centres across Mumbai.
  • Operational plans include about 4,500 volunteers at polling sites, active flying squads and static surveillance, and coordinated transport and parking for EVMs and strong-room movements.
  • Campaigning ends on January 13 at 5:30 p.m., voting is on January 15 and counting is on January 16, with SVEEP outreach and AHAR dining discounts intended to boost turnout.
