BMC Sets Post-Monsoon Restart for Mumbai Road Concretisation, Targets 574 Part-Complete Stretches in Three Months

The Rs 17,000 crore programme is roughly halfway done citywide, with completion projected in 2027.

Overview

  • Preparatory work has begun for a restart next week, supported by a Mumbai Traffic Police NOC and a public dashboard launched on September 4 for road-level updates.
  • Once the 574 partially built roads are finished, the BMC plans to take up 776 new roads measuring about 208.7 km, with officials aiming for substantial progress before the 2026 monsoon.
  • Concretisation will be deferred on narrower or encroached roads, with interim surfacing via mastic asphalt or ultra thin white topping where technical conditions permit.
  • Most partially completed stretches are in the western suburbs, with many incomplete concentrated in P and R wards, while the island city holds the largest share of unconcretised roads due to a cancelled contract.
  • Overall progress stands near 49–50% across 2,121 roads spanning roughly 698.7 km, with Phase 1 about 64% complete and Phase 2 about 37%.
