BMC Sets Firm Deadlines for Two Eastern Suburbs Flyovers

The targets aim to cut travel times on key east–west routes including the Sion–Panvel corridor.

Overview

  • The BMC set the new deadlines on Saturday during site inspections led by Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijit Bangar.
  • The Vidyavihar rail overbridge is about 80% complete and has been ordered ready for operation by August 31, 2026.
  • Work on the two-armed Mankhurd–Maharashtra Nagar flyover is roughly 33% done and the civic body has set a 2027 completion target with reports citing both May 31 and August 2027 as deadlines.
  • Officials instructed contractors to deploy extra manpower and machinery, complete utility shifting with Mahavitaran and Tata Power, and prepare traffic-management and safety plans for commissioning.
  • The projects have fixed specifications and budgets—Vidyavihar is a 650-metre, two-lane link at about Rs 178 crore while Mankhurd comprises two arms of roughly 1.47 km and 1.93 km at about Rs 1,958 crore—and are expected to shorten commutes and ease long-standing congestion at local bottlenecks.
