Overview

  • The civic body deployed five harvester machines and additional crews to clear 1,450 tonnes of hyacinth from Powai Lake between May 23 and June 1.
  • Over the past six months, BMC crews have extracted more than 25,000 tonnes of invasive water hyacinth.
  • An estimated 18 MLD of untreated sewage flowing into the lake each day has spurred rapid hyacinth growth and degraded water quality.
  • The approved sewage diversion tender will reroute sewer lines away from Powai Lake, with work orders slated for issuance next week.
  • A separate tender has been invited for an 8 MLD sewage treatment plant to tackle the root cause of contamination.
