Overview

  • The BMC’s FY 2025-26 climate budget totals Rs 17,066.12 crore with Rs 16,321.33 crore in capital outlays by the civic body and Rs 744.99 crore by BEST.
  • Of this allocation, Rs 15,048 crore or 88% is dedicated to water resource management and urban flood mitigation infrastructure.
  • The action plan calls for electrifying all BEST buses and civic-owned vehicles to achieve at least a 50% reduction in carbon emissions.
  • It also establishes 2030 goals to cut air pollution by 30%, lower the urban heat island effect by 40% and boost vegetation cover by 40%.
  • Environmental activists have criticised the plan for relying on existing initiatives and lacking truly new climate measures.
