BMC Raises Fine for Open Garbage Burning to ₹1,000, Deploys Enforcement Squads

Starting April 1, 2025, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will implement stricter penalties and monitoring to curb environmental and health risks in Mumbai.

• The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has increased the fine for open garbage burning from ₹100 to ₹1,000, effective April 1, 2025.
• Special squads will be deployed in each administrative ward to monitor and prevent open garbage burning, ensuring stricter enforcement of regulations.
• The previous ₹100 fine, introduced in November 2023, was deemed ineffective in deterring the practice, prompting the tenfold increase.
• Open garbage burning contributes to air pollution and poses significant health risks by releasing toxic gases and particulate matter.
• The BMC is also intensifying public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the environmental and health impacts of garbage burning.
