BMC Opens Two Solar-Powered Bio-Toilet Blocks on Mumbai Coastal Road Promenade

Off-grid DRDO bio-digesters address the reclaimed stretch’s lack of sewers, with two more units slated within a fortnight.

Overview

  • Two bio-toilet blocks opened on Monday at the pedestrian underpass opposite Worli Dairy and near the underpass north of Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk on Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road.
  • Each block has 11 seats, is accessible for persons with disabilities, and includes a sanitary pad vending machine and incinerator.
  • The facilities use DRDO-developed bio-digester tanks that process waste internally and run entirely on solar power without electricity lines.
  • BMC plans a total of four such units on the promenade, with the remaining two expected to be operational within about two weeks.
  • The 5.5 km promenade, opened to the public on August 15, features cycle tracks, seating areas, and 300 newly planted trees to increase green cover.
