BMC Notifies 84-Acre Eksar Site for Mangrove Nurseries to Offset VBSL Impact

A public notice opens a 15-day window on using a private Eksar parcel for nurseries required under the sea link’s environmental clearances.

Overview

  • The civic body issued a notice on Saturday earmarking the Eksar, Borivali plot and inviting suggestions and objections for 15 days.
  • The land, owned by M/S Dynamix Clubs and Resorts Pvt Ltd, has been offered on a leave-and-license basis free of cost or at a token rent, with BMC to take possession if unchallenged.
  • About 15 acres from the 84-acre parcel will be selected for cultivation and handed to the Mangrove Cell for roughly five years to raise saplings.
  • BMC plans replanting at a 1:3 ratio and has committed to 137,025 mangrove saplings as part of its environmental plan, with higher initial planting to account for survival rates.
  • Officials say around 9,000 mangroves will be cut and about 50,000 fall in the influence zone of the VersovaBhayandar corridor, a project spanning roughly 25 km and affecting about 165 hectares.
