BMC Issues Stop-Work Orders to 662 Mumbai Construction Sites Over Missing Air Sensors

The bench questioned the city's 'moderate' AQI claim, scheduling a January 23 hearing.

Overview

  • BMC told the High Court that 662 of 1,954 ongoing construction sites lacked mandated sensor-based air monitors after the January 15 deadline, with 1,292 installations completed and 110 in progress.
  • Between December 29 and January 13, officials issued 409 show-cause notices and 284 stop-work notices for non-compliance, with 7 show-cause and 22 stop-work orders later revoked after corrective steps.
  • The civic body said a central dashboard developed with the Council on Energy, Environment and Water is now live to track real-time site data and guide ward-wise enforcement, and 27 body-worn cameras have been ordered for inspection squads.
  • Road dust mitigation was expanded by increasing deep-cleaning water tankers from 41 to 126 across Mumbai.
  • The affidavit detailed action on local sources, reporting 593 bakeries within city limits with 109 conversions to cleaner fuel since April 2025, 170 yet to convert and already served notices.
