Overview

  • On July 3 the BMC floated an Expression of Interest seeking an external agency to restore India United Mill No. 2 & 3 and develop a 44,000 sq m textile museum in Byculla East.
  • The project’s ₹80–100 crore budget will come entirely from CSR or private investors with no financial burden on the municipal corporation and proposals are due by July 28.
  • Phase 1 recreational works covering 7,000 sq m—featuring a musical fountain, murals, an amphitheatre and a souvenir shop—are now complete, clearing the way for full restoration.
  • Last month’s preliminary Phase 2 contract secured parking facilities, modern restrooms and structural repairs ahead of the main museum build-out.
  • The selected agency will oversee restoration of heritage mill structures, appoint on-site historians, conduct underwater basement surveys and manage operations and maintenance for the next 20 years.
