Overview
- During a surprise foot inspection on August 5, Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani called Marine Drive the city’s “crown jewel” and ordered comprehensive upgrades to its public infrastructure.
- Unnecessary barricades and hoardings have been removed, with teams instructed to maintain benches, medians, lamp posts and wheelchair ramps for obstruction-free pedestrian access.
- Authorities have proposed a uniform, heritage-themed color scheme to paint vendor stalls and periphery structures in homage to Mumbai’s cultural legacy.
- Plans are in development to install clean public toilets near tourist hotspots, clear construction debris at Chhoti Chowpatty and build a dedicated pedestrian walkway.
- The roadside police chowky will be relocated to the rear of the chowpatty site and lighting around the Parsi Gate will be enhanced to improve safety and showcase the historic precinct.
