Tuna Sells for $1.3 Million at Tokyo Auction

Michelin-starred Onodera Group secured the 276kg fish, marking the second-highest price ever paid at the prestigious New Year event.

The 608-pound bluefin tuna, caught off the coast of Oma in northern Japan, was purchased for 207 million yen ($1.3 million).
The Onodera Group, in partnership with wholesaler Yamayuki, has claimed the top bid at the Toyosu Market auction for five consecutive years.
The fish will be served at Onodera's Michelin-starred restaurants in Japan and abroad, symbolizing good fortune for the year ahead.
The highest recorded bid at the auction remains 333.6 million yen ($3.1 million) in 2019 for a slightly larger bluefin tuna.
Efforts to conserve the Pacific bluefin tuna, classified as a vulnerable species, have shown progress, with populations recovering faster than expected.
