BLS Cancels October Jobs Report, Shifts November Release to Dec. 16

October unemployment will not be calculated because the shutdown prevented BLS from collecting the household survey.

Overview

  • The bureau said the October household Current Population Survey was not conducted and cannot be retroactively gathered, so no standalone Employment Situation will be issued.
  • October nonfarm payrolls from the establishment survey will be published with November data on Dec. 16, with extended collection and processing for November.
  • The delayed September employment report is slated for Thursday, Nov. 20, restarting major labor data releases after the 43‑day shutdown.
  • A Labor Department site showed 232,000 initial claims and 1.957 million continuing claims for the week ended Oct. 18, which officials described as an early partial posting to be corrected by Nov. 20.
  • With fewer official readings before the Federal Reserve’s Dec. 9–10 meeting, traders adjusted expectations toward holding rates steady, reflecting the reduced data visibility.
