The Moon's red tint came from sunlight refracted and scattered through Earth's atmosphere.

Overview

  • Totality ran from about 19:30 to 20:53 MESZ, with the eclipse concluding near 21:57, as Germany saw only the second half after moonrise.
  • Observers in cities such as Hamburg, Dresden, Bremen, Leipzig and across Bavaria reported strong turnout, with hundreds gathering at harbors, bridges, parks and observatories for photos and viewing.
  • The event was best seen from Australia, Asia and large parts of Africa, offering visibility to billions, while Europe caught the later stages after sunset.

  • The next chance for a total lunar eclipse is 3 March 2026 from the Americas and Asia, with Germany’s next totality on 31 December 2028.
