Blood Moon Caps Total Lunar Eclipse Visible Across Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania

Official agencies reported broad visibility as forecast, with clouds blocking views in parts of Spain.

Overview

  • NASA and national observatories confirmed the September 7 total lunar eclipse, widely seen across the night-side of Europe, Africa, Asia and Oceania, with many others following via livestreams.
  • Spain’s IGN reported precise timings referenced to Madrid: partial phase 18:27–21:56, totality 19:31–20:53, with maximum at 20:11.
  • In most of mainland Spain, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta and Melilla, the Moon rose already eclipsed, while western Galicia and the Canary Islands saw only the partial phase after totality had ended.
  • Aemet’s forecast proved accurate as cloud cover hindered views in regions such as Catalonia and parts of Galicia, leading many observers to miss the deepest red phase.
  • Experts reiterated that lunar eclipses are safe to view with the naked eye, with the Moon’s reddish hue caused by sunlight refracted through Earth’s atmosphere filtering out blue wavelengths.
