Blocking High Keeps Germany Mild and Dry as December Nears Record Warmth

Forecast models keep the block in place into late December, reducing prospects for lowland snow.

Overview

  • A persistent high over Central Europe is enforcing inversion weather with widespread fog or low cloud, limited sun in higher elevations, and largely dry conditions.
  • Temperatures remain well above average, mostly 6–11°C over the third Advent weekend and locally up to 13–15°C early next week in the west, with only isolated night frost in southern valleys and the Alps.
  • The monthly mean is about 5.6°C, roughly 0.9°C below the 2015 record, leaving December 2025 on course to be among the warmest on record.
  • Guidance from GFS, ECMWF, ICON and CFS shows little change and scant precipitation into late month, though late, localized shifts could briefly bring snow to higher terrain near Christmas.
  • Impacts include a DWD glätte warning in parts of southern Bavaria, strained ski areas with scarce snow, and reports of early pollen along the Rhine.
