BLM to Round Up Thousands of Wild Horses in Nevada Due to Overpopulation and Drought
The operation aims to restore ecological balance and protect habitats for other wildlife species, with the rounded-up horses readied for adoption and sale.
- The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) plans to round up approximately 2,875 wild horses across four counties in Nevada due to overpopulation and severe drought conditions.
- The operation will be assisted by helicopters and the gathered horses will be taken to holding facilities at Winnemucca Off Range Corrals, in Winnemucca, Nevada.
- The roundup aims to restore a thriving natural ecological balance and multiple-use relationship on public lands, and to protect the habitat for other wildlife species.
- The current wild horse population in the affected counties is more than six times larger than it should be, leading to insufficient food and water for the horses and other wildlife.
- The horses that are rounded up will be checked by a veterinarian and readied for the BLM’s adoption and sale program.
