Blizzard Warnings and Power Outages as Winter Storm Batters Newfoundland and Labrador

Freezing rain in southern Ontario plus dangerous wind chills in the North broaden a holiday storm into a cross-country hazard.

Overview

  • Environment Canada forecasts blizzard conditions with up to 50 centimetres of snow in the Cartwright area along Labrador’s coast.
  • Elsewhere in Newfoundland and Labrador, 20 to 40 centimetres of snow and wind gusts up to 110–120 km/h are expected to push visibility to near zero into Friday.
  • Newfoundland Power reported roughly 2,000 customers without electricity in one update, then more than 4,500 later in the evening as conditions worsened.
  • St. John the Baptist Basilica in St. John’s canceled its Christmas Day Mass due to hazardous weather.
  • Freezing rain is expected in the Windsor area and parts of the Greater Toronto Area on Friday, while wind chills near −55 were forecast for the Dawson and Whitehorse regions.
