Blizzard Triggers No-Travel Advisories Across Southern Minnesota, Closes I-35 to Iowa

State resources now focus on rescuing stranded travelers.

Overview

  • MnDOT kept no-travel advisories in place across most of the southern half of Minnesota, with I-90 and numerous U.S. and state highways designated unsafe for travel.
  • Interstate 35 remained closed from Albert Lea into Iowa, and U.S. 71 saw closures because of heavy drifting.
  • Gusts topping 40 mph continued to blow and drift snow, leaving roads snow-covered and visibility severely reduced in places.
  • Gov. Tim Walz activated the Minnesota National Guard for rescue support, with an emergency shelter operating at the Albert Lea armory.
  • The State Patrol reported hundreds of crashes and spinouts, and Minneapolis–St. Paul International recorded hundreds of delays and cancellations with additional cancellations early Monday.
