Blizzard Halts Major Updates for Overwatch’s Stadium Mode

The company said reallocating the Stadium team will let it apply technical and design lessons to Overwatch’s core modes.

Overview

  • Game director Aaron Keller announced on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 that Blizzard will stop adding new heroes and maps to Stadium while keeping seasonal balance updates, rank resets, and rewards.
  • Blizzard’s internal data from June shows Stadium’s ranked and unranked queues each account for about 3% of daily players, a tiny share compared with 5v5 Role Queue and several 6v6 formats.
  • Stadium will remain limited to the 33 heroes it already supports, so newly released characters and new stadium-specific maps will not be added going forward.
  • Blizzard said the decision reflects Stadium’s higher time and design cost — each hero required bespoke ability remixes and perks — which made it hard to keep parity with the main roster.
  • The studio is reassigning the Stadium devs to other Overwatch work and will run experimental 6v6 tests (Flex Queue July 16–19 and a Dynamic Queue test July 28–August 3) to study role balance and matchmaking and to inform future changes.
