Blizzard Announces Overwatch Champions Series Following Overwatch League Discontinuation

Operated by Saudi Arabia's Savvy Games Group, the new esports circuit faces challenges including the need for a publishing partner in China and recent game changes.

  • Blizzard has announced the Overwatch Champions Series, a new multi-region competitive circuit for professional Overwatch esports, just two months after discontinuing the Overwatch League.
  • The Overwatch Champions Series will be operated in North America, Europe, the Middle East, and North Africa by Savvy Games Group, a Saudi Arabian esports company.
  • The series will culminate in two major tournaments at Dreamhack, with the first at the Dreamhack Dallas Major and the World Finals at Dreamhack Stockholm.
  • Blizzard still needs a publishing partner for Overwatch in China, as players in that region lost access to it and other Blizzard games in January 2023 due to a falling-out with NetEase.
  • Earlier this month, Blizzard announced a significant change to Overwatch 2 that gave all players a self-healing ability, reducing their reliance on support players and potentially impacting the pro scene.
