Overview

  • Over 50 new wildfires broke out in Greece in the past 24 hours, with dozens of active fronts across mainland regions and islands including Evia, Crete and Kythera.
  • Authorities ordered evacuations in the northern Athens suburb of Kryoneri and multiple island villages as smoke and flames threatened homes and industrial sites.
  • Greece’s fire service has deployed 145 firefighters, 44 engines, 10 aircraft and seven helicopters while officially requesting six additional planes through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
  • In Turkey’s Bursa region, more than 1,700 residents have fled advancing fires, where over 1,900 personnel battle the blazes and a firefighter has died on duty.
  • Sustained heat of up to 44°C, dry vegetation and strong winds continue to fuel the fires, underlining scientists’ warnings of the Mediterranean’s growing wildfire risk tied to climate change.
