Black Women on Broadway Opens Submissions for Monologue Competition and Playwright Reading Series

The new programs create development pathways rooted in August Wilson’s legacy to nurture emerging voices.

Overview

  • Danielle Brooks’ Century Cycle Continues Monologue Competition invites South Carolina high school students to submit 1–2 minute videos by January 3, 2026 at CCCMonologueCompetition.com.
  • Ten finalists will be announced February 3, 2026, with a live finale on February 28 at the South Carolina Governor’s School hosted by Brooks, including cash awards for the top three winners.
  • The competition is presented in the spirit of August Wilson’s Century Cycle and features monologues from contemporary and classic playwrights of color.
  • The Black Women on Broadway Reading Series offers a one-day rehearsal process culminating in a free staged reading on January 12, 2026 at 7 p.m. at The Shed in New York City, with applications open at BlackWomenonBroadway.org.
  • Founded in 2020 by Amber Iman, Danielle Brooks, and Jocelyn Bioh, BWOB says the initiatives expand mentorship and visibility for Black women in theatre, with Bioh calling the series a deeply personal response to shrinking play development opportunities.
