Black Forest Moose ‘Erwin’ Captured and Taken to Wildpark Pforzheim

Authorities link the young bull to a recent park-to-park transport, leaving its time at large unexplained.

Overview

  • City officials and the Ortenau district wildlife officer said the animal was safely captured and transferred to Wildpark Pforzheim.
  • Park management identified the moose as a May 2024 twin from their collection and emphasized it had not escaped from its enclosure.
  • A specialized transporter was scheduled to move the animal to the Bavarian Forest on October 1, and the handover was conducted professionally according to the park.
  • Wildpark leaders said they will take the animal back into care so the young moose can recover in a familiar setting.
  • Wildlife experts had deemed long-distance natural migration from countries such as Czechia or Poland highly unlikely, and the district’s Instagram vote gave the moose the name Erwin.
