Black Canyon Reopens Oak Flat Trail and Part of Uplands on South Rim

Repairs after July’s lightning-sparked wildfire enable a cautious partial return to the South Rim.

Overview

  • The National Park Service reopened the full 1.56-mile Oak Flat Trail and a 0.75-mile segment of the Uplands Trail after completing repairs this week.
  • Closures persist on the Rim Rock Trail, the remaining Uplands segment between Rim Rock and South Rim Road, the East Portal and South Rim campgrounds, and the Gunnison and Tomichi wilderness routes.
  • Officials urge visitors to use caution due to unstable and muddy soil from burn impacts and seasonal moisture, and to check current conditions before visiting.
  • The park shut down entirely on July 10 after lightning ignited fires on both rims; the North Rim reopened July 30 and the South Rim began a phased reopening on Aug. 29.
  • Reports differ on the burn extent, with estimates including about 13% of the park and a figure of 4,232 acres for the South Rim fire.
