Overview

  • Selected visitor amenities including the visitor center, park store, Tomichi and Gunnison Point overlooks, Rim Rock Trail to Tomichi Point and the Red Rock Canyon wilderness route will open to visitors on Aug. 18.
  • East Portal Campground, East Portal Road, South Rim Drive beyond the visitor center, the South Rim Campground, all trails accessed from the South Rim and East Portal and all burned areas will remain closed until further notice.
  • Fire crews report 52 percent containment but note that steep canyon walls are inaccessible, forcing perimeter checks from accessible areas and assessing a minimal risk of spread beyond the 4,232-acre burn footprint.
  • South Rim access hours will be daily from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., with gates locking at 6 p.m. while repairs and hazard assessments proceed.
  • Park officials plan to reopen the rest of the South Rim in stages as site repairs are completed and safety is confirmed, warning that citations may be issued for closure violations.
