Black Bear Pass Reopens After Tow Removes Stranded Kia Above Telluride

Officials reopened the route after towing a stranded SUV that had blocked one-way switchbacks.

Overview

  • The San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office announced on X that Black Bear Pass and Bridal Veil Road are open after the vehicle was towed.
  • A South Carolina visitor drove a Kia Telluride up the one-way trail despite local warnings and became stuck three to four switchbacks past Bridal Veil Falls.
  • Authorities earlier deemed the SUV unstable with wheels off the side of the road and said it was unsafe for other vehicles to pass.
  • During the closure, vehicle access on Bridal Veil Road past the parking lot, including Via Ferrata access, was halted, while the pedestrian Bridal Veil Trail remained open.
  • Officials and local guidance describe Black Bear Road as suitable only for experienced drivers in high-clearance 4WD vehicles, and Telluride prohibits rental cars on the route.
