BJP's Harpreet Kaur Babla Elected Chandigarh Mayor in Narrow Victory

Harpreet Kaur Babla secured 19 votes to defeat AAP-Congress candidate Prem Lata in a closely contested election marked by cross-voting.

Harpreet Kaur Babla, a 60-year-old BJP candidate, won the Chandigarh mayoral election by two votes, defeating AAP-Congress alliance candidate Prem Lata.
The BJP garnered 19 votes in the 35-member Municipal Corporation, aided by cross-voting from three councillors of the AAP-Congress bloc.
The election was conducted under Supreme Court supervision with retired Justice Jaishree Thakur appointed as an independent observer to ensure transparency.
This victory follows a controversial 2024 mayoral election, which was overturned by the Supreme Court after allegations of vote tampering.
Harpreet Kaur Babla, a seasoned politician and former Congress member, plans to focus on restoring Chandigarh's development, improving cleanliness, and generating revenue for the municipal corporation.
