Overview

• BJP has completed organisational elections in most states, including Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh, meeting constitutional prerequisites for a national leadership poll.
• The party’s national council will convene in Delhi before July 21 to endorse a new president by consensus, in keeping with BJP tradition.
• A central election committee will oversee nominations, scrutiny and any required voting to ensure a smooth transition.
• Union ministers Dharmendra Pradhan and ML Khattar and former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan are among the names under consideration.
• Outgoing president JP Nadda, whose term was extended through the 2024 general elections, will hand over the role as BJP turns its attention to 2026 state polls and the 2029 Lok Sabha race.
