BJP Taps Ameet Satam to Lead Mumbai Unit Ahead of BMC Polls

The three-term Andheri West MLA replaces minister Ashish Shelar in a reset that party leaders say positions the Mahayuti to retake the BMC in elections expected in December or January.

Overview

  • State BJP president Ravindra Chavan handed Satam his appointment letter in Mumbai in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Chandrashekhar Bawankule and outgoing city chief Ashish Shelar.
  • Satam outlined priorities of safety, infrastructure, mobility and housing, and pledged to work for a Mahayuti victory and the installation of a Mahayuti mayor at the civic body.
  • He alleged large-scale corruption in the BMC between 1997 and 2022, citing a Rs 3 lakh crore figure, and vowed a push for transparency; the claim remains an allegation.
  • Fadnavis praised Satam’s leadership and said he is confident the BJP can reclaim control of the BMC in the coming polls.
  • The leadership change follows Shelar’s shift to a cabinet role and comes after the BMC’s ward structure was submitted, with Shelar publicly congratulating his successor.
