BJP Secures Sweeping Victory in Gujarat Local Body Elections

The party won 60 of 68 municipalities, all three taluka panchayats, and retained control of the Junagadh Municipal Corporation.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won 60 out of 68 municipalities, all three taluka panchayats, and the Junagadh Municipal Corporation in Gujarat's local body elections held on February 16, 2025.
This marks a significant gain for the BJP, which captured 14 municipalities previously held by the Congress and others, further consolidating its dominance in the state.
The Congress managed to win only one municipality, Salaya, while the Samajwadi Party secured two municipalities, Kutiyana and Ranavav, displacing the BJP in these areas.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel attributed the victory to the party's focus on development and organisational strength, with Modi calling it a reaffirmation of Gujarat's strong bond with the BJP.
The elections were the first to implement a 27% reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in local bodies, a policy introduced by the Gujarat government in 2023.
