• The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) is now opposition-free, with all 59 active councillors aligned with the BJP and its ally AGP.
• AAP councillor Masuma Begum, the last remaining opposition member in the GMC, formally joined the BJP during an induction ceremony on May 6, 2025.
• Prominent anti-CAA activist and Chhatra Mukti Sangram Samiti General Secretary Pranjal Kalita also joined the BJP, citing alignment with the party’s ideology and governance.
• Other defectors include former AGP councillor Kalpana Das and grassroots leaders from Congress, AIUDF, and People’s Party, further bolstering the BJP’s ranks.
• The defections come just one day before the second phase of Assam’s Panchayat polls, signaling a strategic move to consolidate political momentum.
