BJP Presses National Disaster Tag for Jammu Floods as Congress Decries Lack of Relief Announced

No central disaster declaration or relief package has followed the BJP’s memorandum to the home minister.

Overview

  • On September 1, a 25-member J&K BJP delegation led by Sat Sharma and Sunil Sharma met Amit Shah at Raj Bhawan and submitted a memorandum seeking exceptional central intervention.
  • The party asked that the Jammu calamity be declared a national disaster and that a special comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package be sanctioned, arguing the damage exceeds UT capacity and SDRF norms.
  • The memorandum cited loss of lives and extensive damage to homes, agriculture, businesses, and public infrastructure, with essential services disrupted and thousands of kanals of farmland buried, and it sought compensation for families, farmers, businesses, and schools.
  • The delegation proposed long-term flood mitigation through dredging and channelization of the Chenab, Jammu Tawi, and Balol Nallah, noting a comprehensive Chenab plan is already before the Centre and awaiting approval.
  • According to the BJP handout, Shah assured "every possible help," while Congress leader Raman Bhalla called the visit a "damp squib," renewed demands for a national disaster declaration, and sought a probe and white paper on desilting and preparedness.
