BJP Presses Election Commission for Stringent Vetting of Bengal Voter Documents

Phase two of the voter roll revision in West Bengal begins Tuesday.

Overview

  • A BJP delegation met Election Commission officials in New Delhi on Monday and alleged serious irregularities in documents used for voter enrolment in West Bengal.
  • The party urged that birth certificates issued after June 24, 2025 not be accepted for the Special Intensive Revision unless verified case by case by booth-level officers.
  • The memorandum asked that only certificates signed by Group-A officers be accepted and that each document be cross-verified with the issuing authority before inclusion.
  • The BJP recommended district magistrates compile a database of documents issued since January 1, 2002, to be shared with the Chief Electoral Officer for verification.
  • Leaders said the Commission took note of the requests, as the nationwide phase covering 12 states proceeds with door-to-door enumeration starting November 4.
