BJP Points to X Location Readouts to Claim Congress Runs Foreign Accounts

X cautions that its new location indicator can be inaccurate.

Overview

  • At a BJP press conference, spokesperson Sambit Patra cited X’s location readouts to name accounts linked to Congress and allies — including Pawan Khera, Maharashtra Congress and Himachal Pradesh Congress — as appearing outside India.
  • Patra alleged a coordinated push of three narratives from foreign-linked handles — “vote chori,” claims about Operation Sindoor portraying India as weak, and personal attacks on PM Modi and the RSS — and said some accounts changed their listed locations after the feature launched.
  • CongressSupriya Shrinate dismissed the charges as a diversion and pointed to BJP-linked and establishment accounts that also showed overseas locations, including Gujarat BJP, Startup India, DD News and the Adani Group.
  • X’s product guidance says the location field may shift or be wrong due to travel, VPNs or glitches, and independent outlets reporting on the row said they could not verify the readouts for individual accounts.
  • Coverage noted platform actions and defenses by some handles flagged in the row, including the suspension of “Diya Sharma” and a post by “Yashita Nagpal,” as the social-media fight intersects with tensions over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision and “vote chori” claims.
