Overview
- Nominations for BJP president will be accepted between 2 pm and 4 pm today at party headquarters in New Delhi, with scrutiny 4–5 pm and withdrawals 5–6 pm.
- Polling is scheduled for January 20 only if more than one valid nomination remains, and the winner will be announced that day, the returning officer said.
- Nitin Nabin, the national working president, is expected to file his papers and is widely reported to have backing from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
- Chief ministers of BJP-ruled states, state unit presidents, and senior leaders have been called to Delhi to participate in the process and demonstrate organisational unity.
- Under party rules, the president is elected by an electoral college from the National and State Councils; nominees need at least 15 years of membership, four active terms, and proposals from at least five states, and Nabin, 45, would be the youngest to succeed J.P. Nadda if elected.
