BJP Nominates Rekha Sharma for Haryana Rajya Sabha By-Election
The former National Commission for Women chief is among three candidates announced by the BJP for the December 20 bypolls.
- Rekha Sharma, former chairperson of the National Commission for Women, has been nominated by the BJP for the Rajya Sabha by-election in Haryana.
- The bypoll was necessitated after Krishan Lal Panwar vacated the seat to contest and win a Haryana Assembly seat in October; he now serves as Panchayati Raj minister in the state government.
- Sharma's nomination surprised many, as speculation suggested the BJP might choose a Scheduled Caste leader or senior party figures for the seat.
- The BJP also announced candidates for Rajya Sabha bypolls in Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, with Ryaga Krishnaiah and Sujeet Kumar representing the party in those states.
- The bypolls, scheduled for December 20, will fill six vacant Rajya Sabha seats, with results to be declared the same day.
