BJP Moves to Block Bengaluru Tunnel Plan as Karnataka Opens Technical Bids

MP P.C. Mohan plans filings to the NGT plus the State Tender Committee, citing a lack of independent review for the 33-km deep-bore corridor.

Overview

  • At a party press conference, P.C. Mohan called the tunnel push an unfortunate decision given strained civic finances and warned of future costs for citizens.
  • The plan describes an 18-km main tunnel from Esteem Mall to St. John’s Medical College with about 15 km of ramps at a depth of roughly 30–40 metres, with exits at Mekhri Circle, Race Course Road, Lalbagh and Madiwala.
  • Mohan alleged the project lacks neutral technical and environmental scrutiny, saying it relies on government engineers and a private Delhi consultant without an independent committee.
  • He said the Rs 14-crore DPR and feasibility work went to Altinok and Radic, which he claimed are blacklisted, and argued the process was rushed.
  • He argued the alignment appears driven by available land and risks duplicating existing or planned corridors, urged IISc/IIT review and BMLTA oversight, and warned of taxpayer burdens via tolls, higher taxes or diverted funds.
