BJP-Led Mahayuti Seizes Control of Mumbai’s BMC in Sweeping Maharashtra Civic Wins

The result hands the ruling coalition command of India’s richest civic body and greater leverage over urban policy across the state.

Overview

  • The alliance crossed the majority mark in the 227-member BMC with 120 seats, as the BJP won 93 and the Eknath Shinde–led Shiv Sena took 27, making the BJP the single largest party in Mumbai.
  • Across Maharashtra, the Mahayuti registered a broad urban sweep and was reported to control about 25 of 29 municipal corporations, with consolidated tallies showing the BJP winning or leading in roughly 1,293 seats.
  • Devendra Fadnavis said the next Mumbai mayor will be from the BJP and projected the alliance would install 25 mayors statewide following the civic victories.
  • The State Election Commission recorded overall turnout at 54.77% and largely dismissed opposition allegations over indelible ink and EVM issues.
  • Control of the BMC, which has a FY2025–26 budget of about Rs 74,427 crore, positions the alliance to steer major projects and services in Mumbai, with leaders saying the mandate will help accelerate metro and road works.
