Overview
- On July 6, MP Praveen Khandelwal formally wrote to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw proposing that New Delhi Railway Station be renamed Atal Bihari Vajpayee Railway Station
- The proposal also calls for renaming Old Delhi Railway Station as Maharaja Agrasen Railway Station, a plan first backed by Delhi CM Rekha Gupta in a June 19 letter
- Khandelwal highlighted New Delhi Railway Station’s role as one of India’s busiest hubs and described the renaming as a fitting tribute to Vajpayee’s economic reforms and infrastructure legacy
- He cited precedents such as Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus and Bengaluru’s Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna Station to illustrate the practice of honoring national icons through station names
- Both requests now await official approval, with Khandelwal set to meet the railway minister and raise the matter during the upcoming parliamentary session
