Bitmine to Stop Buying Ether After Reaching 5% Cap

Halting purchases will remove a steady weekly source of demand that helped support ether’s price.

Overview

  • Bitmine chairman Tom Lee said the company will stop accumulating ETH once its holdings reach a hard 5%-of-circulating-supply cap; the firm currently holds about 6,016,414 ETH, roughly 4.9%, and needs about 100,000 more coins to hit the limit.
  • At the recent buying pace, closing the roughly 100,000‑ETH gap would take about six to seven weeks and Bitmine reports $643 million in cash and marketable securities that could fund that final tranche.
  • DropsTab and company data value Bitmine’s ETH at about $15.5 billion and show roughly $4.5 billion in unrealized losses because much of the position was bought at higher prices.
  • A large share of Bitmine’s stake is staked via its validator operations, which raises operational risks such as downtime, slashing, and reduced liquidity if the firm needs to move or sell staked ETH.
  • With the steady weekly buyer set to stop, markets should watch for weaker demand pressure, potential price volatility for ETH, and any decisions by Bitmine to sell staked rewards or adjust its treasury that could affect liquidity and governance.
