BitMEX Will Close Its Exchange on Sept. 23, 2026

HDR Global says a strategic review prompted a staged wind-down beginning Aug. 26 that requires users to close positions and withdraw funds

Overview

  • BitMEX announced the shutdown in a notice published Thursday, halted new account registrations immediately, and set a final closure time of 04:00 UTC on Sept. 23, 2026.
  • Trading will run as normal until Aug. 26 when the platform switches to reduce-only and then progressively force-closes open positions so any remaining contracts are automatically closed at shutdown.
  • The company said customer assets are covered by its published Proof of Reserves and unstaked all on-platform BMEX tokens so holders can withdraw them.
  • BMEX collapsed in price after the announcement and BitMEX warned of phishing risks, extra withdrawal reviews, potential blockchain delays, and monthly custody fees of at least $50 or 1% annually for balances left after closure.
  • Analysts say the planned exit will push leveraged liquidity to larger centralized venues and onshore perpetual products, increasing consolidation in crypto derivatives markets and forcing traders to find replacement platforms quickly.
