Bitget Hacker Moves $19.48 Million in Bitcoin, Arkham Says
The fresh transfers point to active consolidation of stolen funds and suggest attackers are moving assets into harder‑to‑trace addresses.
Overview
- Blockchain‑intelligence firm Arkham reported $19.48 million moved in 52 transfers between Oct. 21 and Oct. 24, with about $19.33 million in Bitcoin and the remainder in Ether.
- Arkham also said wallets linked to the September Bitget breach sent $78.01 million to new addresses since Oct. 15, showing a pattern of renewed outflows over the past ten days.
- The firm valued the attacker’s labeled remaining holdings at $242.54 million, mostly in Bitcoin (about 2,960 BTC), a figure that differs from Bitget’s revised incident total of roughly $387.5 million and changes percent‑recovered calculations.
- Bitget says it finished a phased restart of withdrawals on Oct. 2, that customer balances are covered by its Protection Fund, and that the breach stemmed from a vulnerability in a third‑party security product that let attackers submit forged withdrawal approvals.
- Investigators have traced prior conversions through CoinJoin, THORChain, Chainflip and shielded Zcash pools, which create partial visibility and have left the recent destinations — exchanges, mixers, or OTC desks — unidentified and recovery uncertain for customers and creditors.
